Who wouldn’t want to kick start Shop Small Saturday with a pancake breakfast featuring locally-sourced foods?

That was the inspiration behind the inaugural pancake breakfast hosted by the Wyoming County Chamber & Tourism Department and Greater Warsaw Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s not a fundraiser,” said Scott Gardner, Chamber & Tourism president. “It’s more about awareness of what all the businesses in the county have to offer.”

Members of both chambers were on-hand flipping flap-jacks, pouring coffee and providing information about local businesses, as well as those found throughout the county.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the economy,” Gardner said. “Those are the places that populate our Main streets and even peoples’ homes. The idea behind the breakfast was to get people to come out and introduce them to what is in the community and then send them out to shop at the local shops.”

Brandon Zeches, president of the Warsaw chamber, said the breakfast was just one of the suggestions offered by American Express to encourage people to come out and shop along Main Street.

“We (both chambers) haven’t paired together for an event in a while and this was one way we thought would be a great way to kick off the holiday season.

“After all the hype with ‘Black Friday’ it’s important for people to remember to come back home and shop locally too,” Zeches said.

When the Main Street thrives, the whole town thrives, chamber officials said.

“We hope to get people who have never gotten into the local stores to go into them,” Zeches said. “You can find anything from the unique, to things found in the city.”

Additionally, both chambers are hosting promotions for the holidays.

The county chamber kicked off its annual Shop Wyoming and Win promotion Friday, Nov. 24. To participate in the promotion, save the receipts from purchases made anywhere in Wyoming County through Sunday, Dec. 24. Every $50 worth of purchases makes one eligible for one entry in the drawing for a chance at a $25,000 prize and three guaranteed prizes.

Now through Moonlight Magic  on Thursday, Dec. 7 the Warsaw chamber is hosting a smaller-scaled version of Shop Wyoming and Win. Participants who shop at Warsaw merchants and save their receipts can get a chance to win a $50 gift certificate at a Warsaw chamber business. Each receipt is a chance to win, Zeches said.

“Wyoming County is all small businesses,” said Eric Szucs, county tourism marketing director. “It’s what drives our economy. That’s our culture in the county and this day (Shop Small Saturday) celebrates our Wyoming County businesses. But don’t just regulate shopping small to one day, you can shop locally all year long.”
