Residents in the Town of Yorkshire heard a loud boom early Friday morning, August 16, the result of an explosion at Gernatt Asphalt. Delevan Fire Chief Jeff Holmes said the explosion took place at 6:00 a.m. at the Route 16 facility across from Loomis’s Drive-In.
New York State Police reported that 53-year-old Thomas L. Treadway of Cuba was shutting down the plant when the explosion occurred in the conveyer belt. Mercy Flight transported Treadway to the Erie County Medical Center for treatment of severe burns to his upper body. At press time, an ECMC spokesperson said Treadway is listed in serious condition in the hospital’s Burn Unit.
Chief Holmes said that when their crews arrived on the scene the small fire from the explosion was out.
The cause is under investigation.
