Charles E. Urf, former employee of the New York State Department of Transportation

May 30, 1948 – Feb. 28, 2014Charles E. Urf, 65, of Warsaw died Feb. 28, 2014 at the Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw. He was born May 30, 1948 in Batavia, son of the late Wallace H. and June Fisher Urf. Charles was employed for many years with the New York State Department of Transportation. He was an avid outdoorsman in younger years, enjoying hunting and fishing. Surviving are his son, Nelson Urf of Perry; his brothers, Ed (Jean) Urf of Watertown, Wallace (Candace) Urf of Pavilion, Dennis (Bonnie) Urf of Warsaw, William (Kathy) Urf of Arcade; his sisters, Judy (Tom) Mix of Tulsa, OK, Linda (Don) Strang of Attica, Patty (Tom) Kolhagen of Arcade; several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Betty Jean Urf and Lorri Urf. Friends may call Thursday, March 6 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Robinson & Hackemer Funeral Home, 246 N. Main St., Warsaw. Services will be private. Elizabeth Mae Bohmer, former activities director

Aug. 22, 1924 – Feb. 28, 2014Elizabeth Bohmer, 89, left this earth to rejoin her husband Francis and daughter Ruth Ann McGill on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014. Elizabeth was a graduate of Nyack University and Elohim Bible Institute. She worked as Activities Director at Manor Oak in Warsaw, and then worked and volunteered as Activities Leader at Eastside Living and Rehabilitation Center before and during retirement. She was a woman of many talents and interests. Elizabeth was an accomplished pianist, rug hook artist, and author of a trivia book for Nursing Home activities departments to use. She had an exceptional command of words and enjoyed poetry, reading, crossword puzzles and playing Perquackey. She was an avid baker and took great pleasure in sharing breads, cookies, pastries, and cupcakes with many through the years. Elizabeth was a woman of strong faith and her unwavering patience, resilience and tender heart were an inspiration to us all. Elizabeth’s greatest pride and joy were her children and grandchildren whom she loved unconditionally. Elizabeth was born in Jamestown, the daughter of the late Fred and Eva Schrader. She is survived by her son Daniel (Betty) Bohmer of Clermont, GA, three Daughters, Sharon (Matt) Madison of Santa Cruz, CA, Esther (Joe) Thornton of Albany, Rosemary (Bill) Shader of Glenville, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a family of incredibly kind and caring people at Eastside who wrapped their arms around her. Jerry L. Appleby, former maintenance worker

Nov. 9, 1936 – Feb. 27, 2014Jerry L. Appleby, 77, of Warsaw, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014 at the Wyoming Co. Nursing Facility in Warsaw. He was born Nov.9, 1936 in Olean, son of the late Carl and Justina Shoff Appleby. Jerry worked in the maintenance department at the Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw for 22 years until he retired in 1998. Jerry was a member of the Wyoming County Veteran’s Club, L.O.O.M. #560, the Wyoming Conservation Club, the Warsaw Fire Dept. Exempt Firemen, the Fire Council, the Warsaw Rescue Squad, and a lifetime member of the Wyoming Co. Volunteer Fireman’s Association. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association and the 2nd Amendment Task Force of the NRA. Jerry was also a longtime racing fan. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Caroline Corwin Appleby of Warsaw; his sons, Kevin (Jan) Appleby of Summerville, SC, Patrick (Heidi) Appleby of Pittsburgh, PA; his brother, John (Sharon) Appleby of Rochester; his granddaughters, Beverly (Nicholas) Blackston of Paducah, KY, and Brianna Noel Tobin-Appleby of Long Island. He was the father of the late Mark Appleby, who died in 1988. and brother of the late Carolyn Lamitina and Shirley McClure. Calling hours were held Sunday, March 2 at Robinson & Hackemer Funeral Home, 246 N. Main St., Warsaw. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, March 3 at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, N. Gertrude M. Borer, an artist with a passion for painting

Gertrude M. (Gerwitz) Borer, 91, formerly of Freedom, currently of Syracuse, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at home with her loving family by her side.  She was born in Springville, NY, the oldest of ten siblings of Charles and Lugarda (Benz) Gerwitz.  Gertrude grew up in West Valley, NY and she and her husband raised their family in Freedom, NY.  Gertrude graduated from Mercy College of Nursing in Buffalo and was a registered nurse.  She was an artist and had a true passion for painting.  Gertrude was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church and a member of the Legion of Mary.  She hand made over 7000 rosaries throughout her life for missions in many countries.

Weixlmanns host New York Livestock Circuit show in Pike

First time organizers Julie and Jason Weixlmann held a jackpot show, Bred For Banners, on June 8-9 at the Wyoming County Fairgrounds in Pike. While it was the first time they hosted the event, it will not be their last. The involvement by the Weixlmanns came after their children had become involved with showing hogs in the New York Livestock Circuit.

Local student wins homeschool scholarship

Thirteen students were recently awarded a total of $92,000 in college scholarships in the 19th annual Sonlight Scholarship Program from Colorado-based homeschool provider Sonlight Curriculum. Cory Messerschmidt of Holland was awarded a $4,000 scholarship ($1,000 per year).
