We’ve Been Complacent

We thought everybody knew how important a free press was to our world and that all this talk about us being the enemy of the people would be dismissed for the silliness that it is.

The Tragedy of the Belief Commons

In 1968, Garrett Hardin published an article entitled “The Tragedy of the Commons” in the journal Science. In his essay, the American ecologist argued that if a group of cattle herders were provided with a common tract of land upon which each of their cows could graze, the ranchers would invariably destroy that pasture by overgrazing. The Lilac Thief (Part Two)

It was hotter than he ever imagined the world could be and the hatch on the bed of his truck burned his hands. He pulled his sleeves down over them and did it quick, wincing and letting the hatch fall open, fast and careless. He started to untie the knots he had made to secure the tree to the sides of the truck bed, carefully rolling the rope into butterflies and laying them down. He was on the next to the last knot when from behind him he heard the unmistakable chime of a woman—the heels of some kind of fancy shoe slapping against the bare sole of a foot.
